A  Review on a new category of anime that we like to call "Overpowered Protagonist and his harem"

BRIEF DETAILS
Date of release: Summer 2015
Number of episode: 12 episodes
Studio of production: Diomedea

Summary and What I think

In this anime, you have your stereotypical protagonist, Kanata Age who is a sky wizard with hidden power and also known as the traitor. Why he is called the traitor I don’t really get it until the final episode where it is explain vaguely. Kanata has been appointed as an instructor to guide the failures, class of E601 which comprised of your flat-chested Tsundere Misora, fan service but shy Lecty and one of the most annoying characters that I find on the show, Rico to victory and avoid the team from being disbanded by the overly grudge and sarcastic director. Within these 12 episodes, the plot does progress but the focus of this show shifted from beating beetle, the monster that haunted Mystogan, the city which the sky wizard lives to the survival of the class E601 from being disbanded. The introduction of each and every girl to Kanata is quite hilarious and enjoyable and raise a question of how the hell he gets all of this girls.

Character development

Kanata Age

Kanata is the main male lead who is dubbed traitor by the rest of Mystogan but turns out to be kind, who could have guess (sarcasm intended). Despite the looks and feels of being overpowered in every aspect, Kanata is shown to have a certain limit in which even though he has the ability of the dark power, his capability is limited and always resort to a much simple tactic which is laid back and form a contingency plan only to have guess every possible outcome. The show however does not focus solely on Kanata but more towards the female characters and their journey to be the champion in their competition whatever that is.

Tsundere captain, Misora Whitale

The captain of E601 fire team and one of the main girls in this show. An episode is dedicated to explain Misora’s past and why she is determined to be a sky wizard despite all the loss in her belt.

Dual sword woman, Lecty Eisenach

Shy and cute. This character really develop thank to your good old Japanese maid training from a shy and somewhat clumsy character to a more confident and conscious toward her surroundings.

Goddess wannabe, Rico Flamel

Although always stuck in her utopia of men calling her the goddess and adore her, I find this girl at first annoying due to her self-praising. To make up the hate, Rico has her cute side of liking cute thing, even though throughout the series acting like a complete twat.

Graphic and Pace

The graphic in this anime is definitely without a doubt not the best that I have seen. But I guess it is fine for this kind of show and I won’t complain about it too much. The touch of 3D for the representation of the beetle which serves the premise for the villain is poorly done. However, the pacing of the show is just enough to get you excited even though the drawing for the rest of the show is okay-ish.

Music and choreography

The opening is not the best but the ending is surprisingly addictive made by La La Larks. The rest is your usual opening and ending, pretty much the norm.

Verdict

Even thought this anime is a complete let down, the aura of watching this show captures me and became a sudden addiction. I just can’t stop watching how the story progress with one rule of thumb for anime of this kind, which is never, set high expectation on this kind of show. Although, they could make a better ending, but I guess this will do. Hopefully, this anime does not get a season 2, but if it did, please no.
